WORKBOATS NORTHERN AUSTRALIA – INDIGENOUS EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

 Navigate Your Future (NYF) is a joint initiative between Workboats Northern Australia (WBNA), and IS Australia to provide career opportunities for indigenous Australians in the maritime industry and to develop an Indigenous Workforce Development Strategy for WBNA to increase indigenous participation within the organisation.  NYF has been designed as a pilot project and will form the foundations to WBNA’s workforce development strategy.

Stage One – The employment program looks at specially designed training, work preparation activity, LLN support and work placement to provide opportunity to six (6) indigenous jobseekers looking to develop skills, qualifications and a career in maritime services.

Stage Two – Development of WBNA cadetship program is specifically designed to WBNA working conditions, policies, procedures and qualifications incorporating training strategies, high risk licensing, maritime studies to enable indigenous employees progress from deckhand and labouring positions though to Master Five qualifications. 

The cadetship program will provide long term sustainable career pathways within WBNA and the wider maritime industry.

Program will:

  • Recruit six (6) indigenous Australians residing within the Darwin region.
  • Provide industry related skills training in high risk licensing over a 12 month period.
  • Two weeks Pre Employment Program.
  • White construction card training course.
  • Confine space training course.
  • Senior first aid training course.
  • Forklift operations and licence.
  • Working at heights training course.
  • Driver training (where required learners through to provisional).
  • Driver training – HR.
  • Elevated work platform training course.
  • Rigging training course.
  • Dogging training course.
  • Crane operations (VLC) training course.
  • Provide sea time through paid work placements.
  • Provide tutorial assistance and support for trainees to undertake Coxswains qualifications including Elements of Shipboard Safety training course.
